Galil Medical Cryotherapy

Galil Medical delivers a new era of cryotherapy for minimally invasive, targeted cryosurgical ablation.

The advancement of imaging modalities and the development of highly controlled medical devices has delivered the reality of minimally invasive cryosurgical treatments for a wide range of clinical applications. Galil Medical has been at the forefront of these developments with the introduction of a powerful cryosurgery (freezing) platform and innovative 17-gauge cryoablation needles.

Urologists around the world perform minimally invasive procedures with cryosurgery including prostate cancer and renal cancer with Galil Medical cryotherapy guided and monitored with ultrasound. New cryo applications are currently being developed for ablation treatment of liver metastases as well as other malignant and benign tumors and palliative interventions. Cryosurgical treatments for tumors are often performed by Interventional Radiologists (IR) using imaging modalities such as CT and MRI.

The Freezing Process
Galil Medical cryotherapy systems use compressed Argon gas through the Joule-Thomson effect to produce extremely low temperatures. As the gas passes through cryoablation needles, the tip of the needle is cooled, forming an iceball, which engulfs the tumor and destroys the tissue.

The basic principles of cryosurgery for tumors are fast cooling of the tissue to a lethal temperature, thawing, and repetition of the freeze-thaw cycle. Further research is continuously being conducted to better understand the cellular mechanisms involved in cryosurgery in order to increase the efficacy of cryosurgery for specific tumor ablation.

A New Vision of Precision
Presice™ is Galil Medical’s next generation of cryotherapy systems featuring 17-gauge cryoablation needle technology, advanced simulation software and multi-point thermal sensors (MTS) to record temperatures throughout the gland, or tumor.

Tight integration with ultrasound allows planning on a real-time image for prostate cryotherapy procedures. Additional software tools, specifically designed for the urologist, include preoperative simulation of the cryoablation procedure, automatic recommendation of needle placement and data capture for easy patient follow-up.

A full range of 17-gauge cryoablation needles provide different iceball shapes and sizes as well as 90 degree needles for CT image-guided applications and MRI compatible needles for MRI guided surgery. Recently, Galil Medical introduced The Presice™ Cryoablation System and a new family of 17-gauge i-Thaw™ needles which freeze and thaw using only Argon gas.

Cryoablation needle selection, standard configurations and software control enables sculpting of a precise freeze zone to match the size and shape of the target tumor. Small diameter cryoablation needles provide easy, percutaneous insertion during minimally invasive surgery.
